Timeline of Important Events in Canon History:
- Joined the Photo Club at the Light Forest Institute high school.
- Mahiru Koizumi, future SHSL Photographer, also joins this club.
- Quickly becomes jealous of Mahiru's skill and harbors an intense hatred for her and her friend, Sato.
- Fuyuhiko, her brother, is accepted into the Main Course of Hope's Peak as the SHSL Yakuza.
- Gets their father to send her to the Hope's Peak Reserve Course in hopes that will give her a better chance at being scouted herself.
- Speaks with her new classmate Hajime about her plans on entering the course. "If someone were to drop out, like this girl with freckles that I hate," and is confronted by Sato on what she plans to do.
- First argument is diffused by Mahiru, but Sato confronts her again. Natsumi threatens to actually kill her if she keeps this up and walks off.
- Sato decides to instead confront her again, later, to try and stop her from hurting Mahiru and ends Natsumi's life.
Personality:
- In your character's canon, what motivates or drives them to make the decisions and choices they make? While there are a few things that can be considered motivators for her, the biggest one - without contest - is her love for her older brother. The thing she desires most and works hardest to achieve is to be able to walk by his side and avoid being left behind by him. Beyond that, she's also a very selfish person, easily motivated to do things simply because she wants to, or because she feels like it'd benefit her and her own goals. Third on the list, though hardly less important than the other two, is family. As a member of the yakuza, family is very important to her, whether they're blood related or not, and she'll remain absolutely loyal to them, willing to do anything for them.
Natsumi Kuzuryu is a girl that exudes confidence. The way she carries herself, the way she talks, she's someone who knows who she is and what she wants. This errs on the side of egotistical and self-centered in most cases. She thinks very highly of herself, and her self-confidence can easily turn into acting as though she's the greatest thing to walk the Earth, often flaunting what she has. She'll even flaunt things she only believes she has at times, calling the students in the Reserve Course "trash" because she believes she has talent and belongs in the Main Course instead for example. This self-centered way of thinking also makes her incredibly selfish, often looking to obtain things she wants without thought, no matter what it is. If she wants it, she's going to get it, and that's that. If anyone gets in her way, or has what she wants, she can get mean and cruel, willing to bully them relentlessly if it matters enough to her. Sarcasm, passive aggression, these are just a few ways she expresses her point of view on these kinds of people or people she particularly dislikes.
If things are bad enough, it really starts to show just how cutthroat Natsumi is. And as a yakuza daughter - only daughter to the head of the most powerful clan in Japan - that's not something you really want to happen. Some parts of the Kuzuryu clan view her as "more yakuza" than her brother, the heir apparent, and even he tends to agree with them on this matter. She's capable of keeping a cool head in situations she feels she has the upper hand in, giving off an air of control and intimidation and using this to her advantage against others. She'll steer the conversation if she's allowed, happily backing whoever she's tormenting into a corner until they fold. On the other hand, even with the ability to stay calm and cool in most situations, she has a very short temper. If she feels she's lost control of the situation, or if someone says just the wrong thing to her, that cool head easily turns into a loud and angry outburst.
This can very likely be coupled with violent retaliation as well. Her home life has always been full of violence - her parents alone will fight to kill over even small arguments (despite loving each other very much, apparently), and the rest of the clan likely isn't much better - and it's clearly rubbed off on her. She's not afraid to resort to physical confrontation in the least, and can be quick to do so. Sato found herself on the receiving end of this at least twice, possibly more, gaining a scar from one incident and almost finding herself with a black eye or bloody nose if her friend hadn't intervened and stopped Natsumi. The influences from growing up in a criminal syndicate like that don't stop there either. She's extremely good at manipulating others, knowing just the thing to say to affect one or many people at once. She's able to plant animosity towards someone she doesn't like very easily, aware of exactly how to color people's opinions. She had her entire class shooting Mahiru nasty looks with just one simple question, for example. And manipulation isn't the only thing at her disposal that she'll use without hesitation. Underhanded methods and techniques is another thing she's well versed in, and if it'll help her accomplish what she wants she'll use them with no issue. She wants to get into the Main Course of Hope's Peak? Well obviously she just needs to get someone to drop out (AKA bully Mahiru until she does) and she'll be able to fill in her spot, right?
One of the biggest reasons she's so quick to react in situations (sometimes to extremes) is because she's a very passionate person. Natsumi feels her emotions strongly, whether they be positive or negative. There's rarely ever any middle or calm ground with her feelings, automatically jumping to an 9 or 10 in intensity and she acts accordingly in response to that. Her passion extends to more than just her feelings too. She enjoys photography immensely, for example, joining a club for it in high school though that's not the only indication of her love for the hobby. Prone to jealousy in the right circumstance, when the future Super High School Level Photographer Mahiru Koizumi joined the club (and obviously began taking the spotlight with her talent), the yakuza daughter quickly grew to hate her. Mahiru is the girl she is harshest with, and always was throughout their time in the same institute, because she was better at her in photography and Natsumi misread her modesty as "flaunting" her talent. This jealousy only grew when Mahiru was accepted into Hope's Peak and she wasn't. She doesn't always think things through fully, tending to be impulsive at times. Determined to get into the Main Course, her plan for that was to get into the Reserve Course and then somehow be scouted from there. Possibly involving bullying Mahiru until she dropped out, so there would be an empty spot, or just waiting for an empty spot. Either way, despite having a clear goal, she jumped ahead before she had a seemingly concrete plan to achieve it. But she's stubborn and will pursue things she wants or stick to opinions she holds, even if they're wrong.
In spite her mostly negative points, there are actually very good sides to her as well. As the self proclaimed Super High School Level Little Sister, Natsumi exhibits a lot of traits that you'd expect from an excellent little sister. She can be cruel and a brat, but she's actually surprisingly charming in her own ways. Always treating her older brother like an idiot or a moron, for example, but still needing and asking for his help with things or demanding his attention. He says she has a subtle way of getting people to do what she wants, even though she could be a real pain. She's very open, never afraid to share her opinion or speak her mind. Which...isn't always a good thing, of course, but she's honest when and where it counts too. She's surprisingly friendly if you don't give her a reason to hate you, willing to approach and strike up conversation with people she doesn't know without much prompting, if any. Another part of her charm is how energetic she can be, easily getting pumped up for things and becoming very engrossed in them (even going so far as to create a schedule down to the minute for spending the day at an amusement park, excitedly dragging her brother around to accomplish the entire to-do list she created.)
There are more literal aspects of her "title" that she possesses too, considering she is an actual little sister. She's very proud, of both herself of course but also her family (not afraid to admit that she and her family are yakuza, no matter the situation), but she is also extremely proud of her brother as well as proud that she's his little sister. For the most part, Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu is a very large part of Natsumi's world. It could be argued that he's the most important part, and her love for him is unconditional and absolute. To her, he's amazing; even though she treats him like an idiot and is better than him at everything, she has nothing but respect for him and holds him in very high regard. She even states that "talent-less people don't deserve to be with him." She can be very supportive of people she cares about, and this shows best when he's involved. Despite the fact that she could easily lead the clan in his place, and there are members who actually want her to take over instead of him, she declines, stating that the only reason she's amazing is that she has him for an older brother. She'll stand by his side, even if others are looking down on him, and support him as the heir to the family no matter what.
Natsumi wants nothing more than to be his little sister, and this fact reveals a lot about her. Including what is probably a more surprising aspect of her personality. While she's arrogant and proud and confident in every way, overly so in some ways, deep down there are things she's actually extremely insecure about. The biggest thing being how she rates compared to her brother and in her brother's eyes. Her desire to reach the Main Course of Hope's Peak may seem like a selfish desire at first, like maybe she's looking for the prestige because she feels she deserves it, or because it's Mahiru who was accepted and she feels she should have been instead of her, but in reality it's not even close to either of these things. Her reasons for wanting to enter the Main Course and have a talent completely revolve around Fuyuhiko. She's scared that he'll leave her behind one day, that she'll always be in his shadow and looking up to him without being seen as his equal in return. That if she can be recognized as the Super High School Level Little Sister, she can be with him always; she'd have something to be proud of, and have a reason to be proud of herself when standing next to him. It's with almost desperation that she talks about this subject, and this desperation is what ultimately scares Sato into thinking she's going to do something horrible to Mahiru and leads to Natsumi being killed in the end, within her first year in the Reserve Course.
Abilities, Magic and Supernatural Skills/Afflictions:
- While she's a normal human and doesn't have a Hope's Peak talent, Natsumi does possess a few abilities that are above what your average person would have or know. One of those is her physical strength; The Kuzuryu family is known for being incredibly strong, using cracking a coconut in half with your bare hands as a way to prove you're a true man for one example. Another is her fathers apparent ability to pick up and throw huge statues (much, much larger than your average height person) with one hand. Natsumi is said to be the reincarnation of her uncle, who was known as "the most powerful of the Kuzuryus". It's safe to say that she definitely possesses the true Kuzuryu family strength because of this, and you likely don't want to get into a physical confrontation with her. She likely has a fairly high level of pain tolerance to go along with this.
Natsumi also excels in manipulation and intimidation tactics, often able to get what she wants or the kinds of reactions she's looking for, as well as control a situation, without actually resorting to violence as her first choice of action.
Dragon & Magical Element
Elemental Alignment:
- Shadow - Natsumi is yakuza to the core and isn't scared using the questionable tactics she's learned throughout her life. She's very cutthroat, willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish what she's after, and will definitely manipulate others to achieve this or use very underhanded tactics. While she can be mean and cruel, underneath all of this she can also be extremely insecure as well.
Fire - With a strong personality and short temper, Natsumi can sometimes be a serious fire-cracker. She's very passionate and determined, sometimes to the point of being stubborn, with a tendency to get violent if she loses her cool.
Energy - She's also a ball of energy, easily worked up in both positive and negative ways. She's very self-centered and can be very impulsive at times, but at the same time is known for being charming in her own right and supportive of those she cares about.
Dragon:
- A reference! As a note, her and Fuyuhiko's dragon were a collaborative design effort, and are purposefully very similar to one another! They have a yin yang theme, with her dragon acting as the yin of the two.
Natsumi's dragon is female and stands at about four feet at her withers, six and a half feet at the top of her head and measures between fourteen and fifteen feet from snout to tail tip when stretched out fully thanks to her heavy Asian dragon influence (leaving her longer than she is tall). This places her somewhere between the standard and large sized dragons. She's ride able, and could carry a smaller second passenger (only on the ground, owing to how she moves through the air making it awkward for more than one person to fly on her). To ride while flying, Natsumi lays flat against her neck just behind her head, holding onto her antlers at the base.
She has four legs, and four "wings"; these aren't true wings but are actually external swim bladder-like organs, one sitting over each shoulder and on each thigh, and they'll look more like flames or clouds depending on her element. Combining these and her webbed feet, she's able to float and "swim" through the air. These can also be used to control buoyancy in water while swimming, which she partakes in fairly regularly. She doesn't possess any gills, but is capable of diving and remaining underwater for an impressive amount of time thanks to her lung capacity.
She's covered in smooth, fish-like "cycloid" scales, from head to tail with more plate-like scales covering the front of her face, the front of her fore arms and hind feet, and the underside of her neck and belly. The cycloid scales are black, freckled with solid gold ones here and there, and possess a golden sheen to them while plates have a soft, velvety texture, and are golden as well. To contrast with her all black body, her eyes are white. The iris and pupil are actually a slightly different shade of white than the sclera - up close you would be able to tell the difference - but even from a small distance they look as though they are pure white. Her horns, as mentioned, are actually a set of small antlers with dull tips.
Her diet is omnivorous leaning heavily on the carnivore side, consisting of fish, crustaceans and smaller aquatic animals mainly. Depending on her element, non-food items may enter her diet as well, such as charcoal/rocks/wood if she receives fire for example.
The egg itself is around the size of a rhea egg, big enough to fit into the palm of your hand without needing both hands to hold it. It looks like gold-veined black marble, with a smooth and glossy shell, and will take about a week to hatch. Once hatched, she'll be about as big as a six week old kitten.
Personality traits inherited from Character Bond:
- Manipulative Sweetness
- Supportive
- Proud
- Loves Oniichan
Writing Samples
First Sample: Egg hatching should always be a family event.
Second Sample:
- As unsettling as it was to know that their world had been destroyed...there were some aspects that Natsumi actually found very comforting about the situation. There was less pressure here in Osaaru, on both her and her brother. Less pressure from their family, less pressure from their society and culture...of course it's not like she cared what most people thought of her and her affiliation with the yakuza. And she knew, for the most part, her brother didn't either! But...you know, being somewhere where that wasn't really as huge a part of everything was still kind of relaxing in its own way. But what she probably found herself enjoying the most - at least at first - was the lack of talent. Not that you could say there weren't any talent at all or anything, but there wasn't such a heavy, obsessive focus on it...there wasn't an entire academy dedicated to it, wasn't the guarantee that just because you graduated with talent you'd be set up for life and if you didn't, who knows how your life would end. There wasn't a prejudice that even she suffered from in some cases, just because she didn't have any special talent. It was really, really nice. Though as time wore on, it didn't really remain that way...
Because even without Hope's Peak and that focus and everyone talking about Talent all the time...that didn't really change the fact that she wasn't special. She wasn't remarkable in any way. She wasn't like her brother or Peko or their friend Chiaki. They still had their talents. Even if they weren't going to that school...if her brother wanted to rebuild their clan? He could. Even if they were rebuilding from the ground up. No one would ever be able to defeat Peko or Chiaki at their talents, not in a million years. But what did she have? What could she do that was remarkable or useful or something no one else could? Nothing. She was just her. Just Natsumi Kuzuryu. With all of this weighing as heavily on her mind as it was, she decided spending some time exploring on her own today would be a good idea. Just her and her dragon. Though in the end not much exploring was actually done...sure, they'd found a neat little cave system to go through, but it wasn't too far into it that the blonde decided a break was in order so her dragon could swim in one of the little puddles around and she could sulk.
"At least you don't care if I have talent..." The words are mumbled, the girl not even expecting her companion to care about what she's saying with how much she seemed to be enjoying her dip, but it's not long before the small reptile makes her way back onto land and noodles over to her Scion to see what's up. Because that sure didn't sound very happy! And her Scion sure doesn't look very happy...even the reassuring pets she's getting aren't enough to convince her that something isn't up, which is why she squirms her way - soaking wet still - into Natsumi's lap, despite any protests. Of which there are no more than a heavy sigh.
"What? That water not good enough for you or something?" She only sounds half annoyed with her now wet clothing, fingers running over mane and scales a lot more firmly now that the dragon apparently isn't going to just leave her alone. "Well...at least I can take care of you pretty okay. You're not dead yet, so that's gotta count for something, yeah? Though I guess I still have time to figure out some creative way to kill you...hey-!" The exclamation was due to a few nips from her little friend. Luckily she doesn't really have any teeth to speak of yet, so the most her fingertips get is a little gumming, but still! There was totally no need to do that. With another sigh Natsumi leans back against the cave wall and sinks down a little, so she can cradle her dragon on her stomach more than in her lap. Curling some of her mane gently around a finger or two, rubbing those velvety face scales...
"Sorry, shouldn't have suggested something like that huh?" Content with the apology, the little one curls up, chirping and trilling pleasantly at her human, and the blonde can't help but smile a little at that. "Yeah, don't worry. I won't let anything bump you off, okay? I may not be talented like the others but I can promise you that much at least." Maybe the exploring didn't really cheer her up any, but looks like it won't be impossible for her to return to their cave home in a better mood with her noodle around.
