CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Natsumi Kuzuryu
Age: 16
Canon: Danganronpa
Canon Point: After death
Character Information: Natsumi on the wiki

Personality:

Natsumi Kuzuryu is a girl that exudes confidence. The way she carries herself, the way she talks, she's someone who knows who she is and what she wants. This errs on the side of egotistical and self-centered in most cases. She thinks very highly of herself, and her self-confidence can easily turn into acting as though she's the greatest thing to walk the Earth, often flaunting what she has. She'll even flaunt things she only believes she has at times, calling the students in the Reserve Course "trash" because she believes she has talent and belongs in the Main Course instead for example. This self-centered way of thinking also makes her incredibly selfish, often looking to obtain things she wants without thought, no matter what it is. If she wants it, she's going to get it, and that's that. If anyone gets in her way, or has what she wants, she can get mean and cruel, willing to bully them relentlessly if it matters enough to her. Sarcasm, passive aggression, these are just a few ways she expresses her point of view on these kinds of people or people she particularly dislikes.

If things are bad enough, it really starts to show just how cutthroat Natsumi is. And as a yakuza daughter - only daughter to the head of the most powerful clan in Japan - that's not something you really want to happen. Some parts of the Kuzuryu clan view her as "more yakuza" than her brother, the heir apparent, and even he tends to agree with them on this matter. She's capable of keeping a cool head in situations she feels she has the upper hand in, giving off an air of control and intimidation and using this to her advantage against others. She'll steer the conversation if she's allowed, happily backing whoever she's tormenting into a corner until they fold. On the other hand, even with the ability to stay calm and cool in most situations, she has a very short temper. If she feels she's lost control of the situation, or if someone says just the wrong thing to her, that cool head easily turns into a loud and angry outburst.

This can very likely be coupled with violent retaliation as well. Her home life has always been full of violence - her parents alone will fight to kill over even small arguments (despite loving each other very much, apparently), and the rest of the clan likely isn't much better - and it's clearly rubbed off on her. She's not afraid to resort to physical confrontation in the least, and can be quick to do so. Sato found herself on the receiving end of this at least twice, possibly more, gaining a scar from one incident and almost finding herself with a black eye or bloody nose if her friend hadn't intervened and stopped Natsumi. The influences from growing up in a criminal syndicate like that don't stop there either. She's extremely good at manipulating others, knowing just the thing to say to affect one or many people at once. She's able to plant animosity towards someone she doesn't like very easily, aware of exactly how to color people's opinions. She had her entire class shooting Mahiru nasty looks with just one simple question, for example. And manipulation isn't the only thing at her disposal that she'll use without hesitation. Underhanded methods and techniques is another thing she's well versed in, and if it'll help her accomplish what she wants she'll use them with no issue. She wants to get into the Main Course of Hope's Peak? Well obviously she just needs to get someone to drop out (AKA bully Mahiru until she does) and she'll be able to fill in her spot, right?

One of the biggest reasons she's so quick to react in situations (sometimes to extremes) is because she's a very passionate person. Natsumi feels her emotions strongly, whether they be positive or negative. There's rarely ever any middle or calm ground with her feelings, automatically jumping to a 9 or 10 in intensity and she acts accordingly in response to that. Her passion extends to more than just her feelings too. She enjoys photography immensely, for example, joining a club for it in high school though that's not the only indication of her love for the hobby. Prone to jealousy in the right circumstance, when the future Super High School Level Photographer Mahiru Koizumi joined the club (and obviously began taking the spotlight with her talent), the yakuza daughter quickly grew to hate her. Mahiru is the girl she is harshest with, and always was throughout their time in the same institute, because she was better at her in photography and Natsumi misread her modesty as "flaunting" her talent. This jealousy only grew when Mahiru was accepted into Hope's Peak and she wasn't. She doesn't always think things through fully, tending to be impulsive at times. Determined to get into the Main Course, her plan for that was to get into the Reserve Course and then somehow be scouted from there. Possibly involving bullying Mahiru until she dropped out, so there would be an empty spot, or just waiting for an empty spot. Either way, despite having a clear goal, she jumped ahead before she had a seemingly concrete plan to achieve it. But she's stubborn and will pursue things she wants or stick to opinions she holds, even if they're wrong.

In spite her mostly negative points, there are actually very good sides to her as well. As the self proclaimed Super High School Level Little Sister, Natsumi exhibits a lot of traits that you'd expect from an excellent little sister. She can be cruel and a brat, but she's actually surprisingly charming in her own ways. Always treating her older brother like an idiot or a moron, for example, but still needing and asking for his help with things or demanding his attention. He says she has a subtle way of getting people to do what she wants, even though she could be a real pain. She's very open, never afraid to share her opinion or speak her mind. Which...isn't always a good thing, of course, but she's honest when and where it counts too. She's surprisingly friendly if you don't give her a reason to hate you, willing to approach and strike up conversation with people she doesn't know without much prompting, if any. Another part of her charm is how energetic she can be, easily getting pumped up for things and becoming very engrossed in them (even going so far as to create a schedule down to the minute for spending the day at an amusement park, excitedly dragging her brother around to accomplish the entire to-do list she created.)

There are more literal aspects of her "title" that she possesses too, considering she is an actual little sister. She's very proud, of both herself of course but also her family (not afraid to admit that she and her family are yakuza, no matter the situation), but she is also extremely proud of her brother as well as proud that she's his little sister. For the most part, Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu is a very large part of Natsumi's world. It could be argued that he's the most important part, and her love for him is unconditional and absolute. To her, he's amazing; even though she treats him like an idiot and is better than him at everything, she has nothing but respect for him and holds him in very high regard. She even states that "talent-less people don't deserve to be with him." She can be very supportive of people she cares about, and this shows best when he's involved. Despite the fact that she could easily lead the clan in his place, and there are members who actually want her to take over instead of him, she declines, stating that the only reason she's amazing is that she has him for an older brother. She'll stand by his side, even if others are looking down on him, and support him as the heir to the family no matter what.

Natsumi wants nothing more than to be his little sister, and this fact reveals a lot about her. Including what is probably a more surprising aspect of her personality. While she's arrogant and proud and confident in every way, overly so in some ways, deep down there are things she's actually extremely insecure about. The biggest thing being how she rates compared to her brother and in her brother's eyes. Her desire to reach the Main Course of Hope's Peak may seem like a selfish desire at first, like maybe she's looking for the prestige because she feels she deserves it, or because it's Mahiru who was accepted and she feels she should have been instead of her, but in reality it's not even close to either of these things. Her reasons for wanting to enter the Main Course and have a talent completely revolve around Fuyuhiko. She's scared that he'll leave her behind one day, that she'll always be in his shadow and looking up to him without being seen as his equal in return. That if she can be recognized as the Super High School Level Little Sister, she can be with him always; she'd have something to be proud of, and have a reason to be proud of herself when standing next to him. It's with almost desperation that she talks about this subject, and this desperation is what ultimately scares Sato into thinking she's going to do something horrible to Mahiru and leads to Natsumi being killed in the end, within her first year in the Reserve Course.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Super strength. The Kuzuryu family are known for their amazing strength, being able to split coconuts with their bare hands as a way to prove you're a true man, and her father being able to lift bronze statues much, much larger than himself. She's said to be the reincarnation of her uncle, who was the strongest in the clan, suggesting that she's even stronger than her father.

Natsumi also excels in manipulation and intimidation tactics, often able to get what she wants or the kinds of reactions she's looking for, as well as control a situation, without actually resorting to violence as her first choice of action.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Natsumi Kuzuryu (The characters for Natsumi being "夏美" instead of "菜摘")
AU AGE: 18
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Black hair rather than blonde. Amber eyes rather than pure gold.

AU HISTORY: I 100% have permission from both Katar and Jade to use their characters in this AU as they are doing with mine. Here's a handy dandy spreadsheet to help!

- Natsumi was born in Kyoto, Japan to a low-ranked yakuza family. Both of her parents were participants in this clan, with her mother being more of a housewife. Fuyuhiko is her older brother by a little over six years.
- Despite their age gap, they grew very close together, Natsumi idolizing her brother and attaching herself to him at a very early age. He was the biggest influence for her in her life and she looked up to him for example and guidance rather than either of their parents.
- When she was 11 years old, Fuyuhiko (age 18) left to join the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force in an attempt to leave the yakuza life behind him. She was very distraught over this, but he promised he would return once he was able to support himself and that, if she kept up with her studies, she would be able to come live with him if she wanted. They kept in contact while he was gone, emailing and writing letters to each other at least once a month.
- When she was 13, she was scouted by a modeling agency as a prospective fashion model. She accepted their offer, working part time as a kids/teens model for various magazines and advertisements, effectively making an early career out of the opportunity.
- During her last year in junior high, at age 14, her parents died while she was at school due to their yakuza connections and lifestyle. With no one else to stand in as her legal guardian, Fuyuhiko left the SDF early to accept the role himself. After finishing her current school term, Fuyuhiko relocated them to the United States to permanently put their old lifestyle behind them and find a fresh, better start for the both of them. Peko, Fuyuhiko's best friend, joined them.
- With eight months until she began her first year of high school in Recolle, she accepted tutoring for her English. With only a few years under her belt from junior high classes Natsumi was nowhere near fluent in the language. She would also take English classes throughout high school to try and aide her in learning as fast as she could. She began high school at 15.
- Natsumi took her two years of modeling experience and built a portfolio, pitching herself to various agencies in the states in an attempt to gain a new contract. She succeeds, beginning work anew under the professional name "--".
- By 18 she'd managed to become fluent in English and graduated high school, starting her first year of college the following September.
- By January Natsumi, Fuyuhiko and Peko have been living in Recolle for five years. She lives with the both of them in a three bedroom apartment above Peko's kendo studio, located in the Tisse district. She is currently in the middle of her freshman year of college as an undeclared major, still working as a fashion model and slowly moving up in the industry (more well know than she was when she started, though not famous just yet), as well as working towards citizenship.

AU PERSONALITY:

Rather than there being any hard differences between Natsumi's canon and AU personalities, it's more that some aspects are lessened while others are reinforced. She's still the same girl, just with different focuses in her life. Because her family is a much lower and smaller part of the clan, rather than leading at the head, Natsumi was never indoctrinated as much into the yakuza lifestyle as she was in canon. The focus was much heavier on bringing Fuyuhiko into the family properly. That's not to say she doesn't have yakuza values instilled in her, but she was able to develop more independently from them too.

Growing up, with Fuyuhiko being much older than her compared to their age gap in canon, he was less something to measure herself against and much more of a role model. She wanted to spend as much time with him as she was able, looking up to him as an example to follow more so than their parents. This gave her a stronger set of morals and sense of right and wrong to follow, though she still doesn't quite follow it to a T like her brother. Likewise, her confidence comes less from being a yakuza princess and more from the positive encouragement she received from her brother. So while she still thinks very highly of herself, it doesn't come from an over inflated ego. Of course, she still has some of her old ego and is still a brat, but it's not longer to the "better than sliced bread" extent.

Another big factor in how she developed as she grew older was the lack of Hope's Peak and the obsession with talent in general. Natsumi's biggest fear and insecurity in canon was not being able to measure up to her brother and consequently being left behind by him because of it. Her desperation for talent is what lead to her death in the end, pushing her too far in her attempt to get into the main course. That's completely removed here, removing that stress and anxiety along with it. She was, and continues to be, able to be something other than talented and can focus on things other than trying to achieve that title.

All of this doesn't mean she isn't still yakuza underneath everything. While she did grow up with a more positive influence from her brother, it's not as if she hated her parents. In truth, she loved them too and paid attention to them as well. Not quite to the extent that she idolized her brother, but she was learning from them too as she grew up. Especially during the two years that Fuyuhiko was gone, leaving her with no one else to constantly depend on and look to for guidance during that time. So while her attitude isn't as bad as it could be, and she's not nearly as violent as she is in canon, these traits are still in her. They're merely dampened a little, letting some of her better traits shine instead.
